Lion's Head sunset hike

Lion's Head sunset hike has a spectacular 360 panoramic views, it summit at 669 meters. It is not the highest of the many peaks that make up the Cape Peninsula mountain chain but it is one of the three iconic peaks that surround the city of Cape Town. From the summit you can cast your eyes over the city of Cape Town, Table Mountain, the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton. There’s no swift cable way ride to the top, hiking up Lions Head can take anywhere between one and two hours. The somewhat steep hike winds its way around the head until you reach the top; It involves some interesting aspects: ladders, a chain traverse of an exposed ridge and some steel handles for safety reasons. Way it is a Cape Town tradition to hike to the summit to toast the full moon as it rises over the mountains to the East and to watch the sun setting to the West.

This hike could also be done at sunrise.

Signals from the summit

The first official use of Lion's Head was a permanent watch station with a small signal cannon and a flag. Under British occupation a signalling station was built on Signal Hill replacing the old Dutch cannon on the top of Lion's Head. Today at 12 midday you will hear the Noon Gun as it is now called from the slopes of Signal Hill. This is the oldest tradition in Cape Town.
