The second part of the hike take us along the eastern side of the mountain before walking across the front plateau of Table Mountain. Way down by cable car.

Kirstenbosch botanical garden

The name Kirstenbosch first appeared in 1795 when it was listed on an inventory of property drawn up and handed over to the British forces. The origin of the name is uncertain..a few families by the name  of Kirsten lived in the area but none of them ever owned the property.

Table Mountain

Table Mountain is less than 100 million years old, having been eroded over the years from a much higher and connected massif. It is mainly composed of laid down layers of sandstone and quatzile, this huge mass rest on a bed of slate this in turn rest on a foundation of Cape granite.

Table Mountain Interesting first

The first horse ride up Table Mountain was in 1798. In 1937 Sidney Jarman aged 72 cycled from Constantia Nek to the top of Table Mountain. The first motor car to reach the top was driven in 1928. The fastest ascent of Platteklip Gorge is 27 minutes up with a descent in 11 minutes. Table Mountain was first illuminated in 1947. Paragliders first launched off Table Mountain was in mid 1980. Base jumpers Karl Hayden and Shaun Smith plunged off the mountain in 1998. Bungy jumpers have jumped from the cable car. In 2014 AJ Calitz ran up Table Mountain 14.5 times in 12 hours!
