Table Mountain hike

Table Mountain

Table Mountain one of the most recognizable mountains in the world yet only just higher than 1000m. Small in comparison with the mountain giants of the world. Flat topped overlooking Cape Town and Table Bay dominating the northern end of the high rocky Cape Peninsula. Its flat top results from near horizontal layers of sandstone exposed by vigorous wind and water erosion. The mountain 3km northern face contrast with the fertile summit plateau broken by small valleys and streams. To the west, along the Atlantic coast, The Mountain is framed by a series of peaks referred to as the Twelve Apostles. The mountain has its own cloud cover (the Tablecloth) when strong southeast wind blow.

Table Mountain Interesting first

The first horse to ride up Table Mountain was in 1798. The first motor car to reach the top of the mountain was in 1928. The fastest ascent of Platteklip Gorge is 27 minutes up and 11 minutes down..can you beat it? The mountain was first illuminated in 1947 during the British royal family's visit. Base jumper plunged off the mountain in 1998. A J Calitz ran up Platteklip gorge 14.5 times in 12 hours.
