Lion's Head Sunset Hike

Hiking Lion's Head

If you were hiking Lion's Head at a time of day when the sun was low and behind you and if you climbed high enough to look down into a mist below, you might witness the shadowy figure of the Brocken Spectre. It’s your own shadow that you see, cast on the surface of the mists below, surrounded by a halo-like ring of light. The sun must be behind you. You’re seeing your shadow projected in front of you, through the mist.

Table Mountain the most recognizable mountains in the world is yet only just higher than 1000m. Small in comparison with the mountain giants of the world. Flat topped overlooking Cape Town and Table Bay dominating the northern end of the high rocky Cape Peninsula. Its flat top results from near horizontal layers of sandstone exposed by vigorous wind and water erosion. The mountain 3km northern face contrast with the fertile summit plateau broken by small valleys and streams. To the west, along the Atlantic coast, The Mountain is framed by a series of peaks referred to as the Twelve Apostles, it has its own cloud cover (the Tablecloth) when strong southeast wind blow. Table Mountain National Park encompasses the incredibly  mountain chain stretching all the way from Signal Hill in the north to Cape Point in the South, over a distance of around 60km. The area forms part of the Cape Floristic region and supports a high diversity of flora a lot of it rare and endemic. The Mountain was formed under the sea about 600 million years ago and shaped by the breaking up of the continents, the moving of the glaciers formed the flat top before the mountain was thrust upwards by tectonic forces. It has been weathered by wind and water. It is older than the Alps and believed to be at least 6 times older than the Himalayas. Table Mountain is composed of sandstone, granite and Malmesbury shale. Table Mountain was originally named by the Khoi – Hoerikwaggo – Mountain of the Sea.
